The bay features thousands of limestone karsts and isles in various shapes and sizes. Vịnh Hạ Long là Di sản Thế giới được UNESCO công nhận và là điểm đến du lịch nổi tiếng (1) ở tỉnh Quảng Ninh, Việt Nam. Vịnh có hàng nghìn đảo đá vôi và đảo đá vôi với nhiều hình dạng và kích thước khác nhau. Vịnh Hạ Long là trung tâm của một vùng lớn hơn (2) bao gồm Vịnh Bái Tử Long về phía đông bắc và đảo Cát Bà về phía tây nam.

      Vịnh Hạ Long có diện tích khoảng 1.553km2, bao gồm 1.960 - 2.000 đảo nhỏ, hầu hết (3) __ số đó __ là đá vôi. Vùng lõi của vịnh có diện tích 334km2 với mật độ 775 đảo nhỏ. Đá vôi ở vịnh này đã trải qua 500 triệu năm hình thành trong các điều kiện và môi trường khác nhau. Quá trình phong hóa đá vôi trong vịnh này đã mất 20 triệu năm (4) dưới tác động của khí hậu ẩm ướt nhiệt đới. Sự đa dạng về địa lý của môi trường trong khu vực đã tạo nên sự đa dạng sinh học, bao gồm hệ sinh thái nhiệt đới thường xanh, đại dương và bờ biển.
