Read the following passage. Choose and circle the correct answer A, B, C or D. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) research, the emission from car exhausts causes more deaths than road accidents. The research found that one third of all harmful air pollution was caused by road transport, and that long term exposure to pollution caused estimated 21,000 premature deaths a year across the three countries, France, Austria and Switzerland. This is much higher than the 9,947 who died that year as a result of road accidents. In addition, the researchers calculated that the car fumes caused 300,000 extra cases of bronchitis in children, and 15,000 extra hospital admissions for heart disease made worse by the pollution. They calculated that the cost of dealing with all this was 27 billion Euros per year. A lot of money goes into making cars safer, but not as much is spent solving air pollution. 1. What is the main idea of the text? A. Pollution and road accidents B. Bad effects of car exhausts C. the necessity of making cars safer D. The toll of road accident 2.According to the passage,.......................................................... A. air pollution causes more deaths than road accidents. B. road accidents cause more deaths than car fumes. C. long term exposure to pollution is harmless. D. car fumes cause one third of premature deaths. 3. Which of the following is not true? A. Car exhausts cause bronchitis and heart disease. B. Car fumes cause one third of all harmful air pollution. C. Each year road accidents cause 9,947 deaths. D. More people died as a result of air pollution than road accidents. 4.The money spent solving air pollution is ......................................................... A. 27 billion Euros per year B. not able to calculate C. more than making cars safer D. less than to make car safer 5. Which of the following is not mentioned as the bad effect of air pollution? A. Causing illness in children B. Causing premature deaths C. Causing road accidents D. Causing heart diseases

There are many kinds of pollution. Air, water, and land can be polluted. Some pollution is caused by
nature, such as foods, forest fires, and volcanoes. People are the major Cause of pollution. We pollute the
air with our cars, homes, and factories. Smoke from factories and car exhaust makes the air looks gray and
smoggy. Some people cannot go outside when the air is very bad! We pollute the water by dumping
garbage and Chemicals in the water. Plants and animals die because of the pollution in the water. We
pollute the soil with Chemicals and garbage. We harm the land by cutting down trees in the forest,
especially to build roads and new houses without careful planning and thinking.
The only way to save our environment is to think about pollution. How can you stop or limit pollution?
How do we protect our environment? Conservation is one way to protect our environment. Conservation is
the wise use and protection of our environment. We can control water pollution by not producing as much
as waste and by proper disposal of sewage and garbage. We can take care of recreation land by cleaning up,
after ourselves and not causing more pollution. Carpooling and public transportation will help reduce air
pollution.

Air pollution is a cause of ill-health in human beings. In a lot of countries there are laws limiting the amount of smoke which factories can produce. Although there isn’t enuogh information on the effects of smoke in the atmosphere, doctors have proved that air pollution causes lung diseases.

The gases from the exhausts of cars have also increased air pollution in most cities. The lead in petrol produces a poisonous gas which often collects in busy streets surrounded by high buildings. Children who live in areas where there is a lot of lead in the atmosphere can’t think as quickly as other children and are clumsy when they use their hands.

There are other long-term effects of pollution. If the gases in the atmosphere continue to increase , the earth’s climate may become warmer. A lot of the ice near the Poles ma melt and may cause serious floods.

In order to help solve the problem of pollution, people have to be aware of its causes, some of which are quite obvious in everyday life. In many cities people are forced to breathe in polluted air, commonly known as smog, which is a mixture of gases sent out by car exhausts and factory chimneys. What can be done to reduce air pollution is to remove factories from cities and use lead-free petrol in cars.

The pollution of rivers, lakes and seas leads to the death of the creatures that live in them. Factories are largely responsible for the present situation, which is expected to worsen if governments do not make them to obey the law against pollution and punish industries which pollute water.

Finally, all over the world, especially in cities, we see huge amounts of rubbish in the streets, which we are responsible for. The rubbish collection system often does not work properly and people themselves add to the problem by dropping litter in the streets. There is so much we could do to help solve the problem. The point is how willing are we to do something about it?

1. In order to help solve the problem of pollution,
A people need to know what causes it.
B people don’t need to know what causes it.
C people have to do something immediately.
D people don’t need to do anything about it.

C cars and factories.
D air

3. The pollution of rivers, lakes and seas is largely caused by
A car exhausts.

4. Which of the following is NOT true?
A People add to the problem of pollution by collecting rubbish.
B People add to the problem of pollution by dropping litter.
C Huge amounts of rubbish in the cities cause pollution.
D We are responsible for huge amounts of rubbish in the cities.
