Some people think that sports and games are unimportant things. In fact, sports and games can be of great value, especially to people working with their brain most of the day. Sports and games make our bodies strong and keep us healthy. But these are not their only uses. They give us valuable practice in making eyes, brain and muscles work together. For example, in tennis, our eyes see the ball coming, judge its speed and direction and pass this information on to the brain. The brain then has to decide what to do, and send its orders to the muscles of the arms, legs, and so on. So tennis helps train the co-ordination among eyes, brain, arms, and legs.

Sports and games are also useful for character training. In their lessons at school, boys and girls may learn about such virtues as unselfishness, courage discipline, and love of one’s country. In sports and games a pupil can really practise these virtues.

Music influences people in different ways or the same person differently at different times. Music may seem to influence people differently. That is because people can react differently to the music. We are able to apply a choosing process to the music we hear. If someone hates jazz, then a jazz piece with a positive effect will probably not make him feel good. A happy song might appear to make an angry person angrier, yet it is not the music itself that is creating the anger; rather it is the positive effect of the music. The angry person does not want to accept the song's happy feeling: it points out his already existing anger, and makes that anger come to the surface. When a piece of music is played and we are listening to it, our body, mind, and feelings are being affected. The musicians of ancient cultures such as China, India, Turkey and Greece understood the effects of music. In fact, Pathagoras, in ancient Greece, introduced a whole science that concerned them. Because the musicians of these ancient cultures understood these effects, they created music that was positive, uplifting, and beneficial. Once the effects of music are better understood, the next step is to gain a better understanding of the music around us, and what effect it is actually having.

1. The text is about ______.

A. The science of music                                               B. Understanding music

C. The effects of music on human feelings                 D. Music and an angry person

2. Music ______.

Christmas is almost here. Holiday music fills the air. Colorful lights shine brightly in windows. The stores are crowded with people buying last-minute gifts. All these are Christmas traditions. Another tradition is snow. Christmas in the northern part of the world comes a few days after the start of winter. So, in many places, a blanket of clean white snow covers ther ground on Christmas Day. This is what is meant by a “White Christmas”.

Of course, many places do not get snow in December. In fact, they may be very warm at that time of year. People who like snow-but live where it is warm- dream of having a white Christmas. American songwriter Irving Berlin captured these feelings in his song “White Christmas”. “White Christmas” is one of the most popular songs of all times. Hundreds of singers and musicians have recorded it. Perhaps the most famous version was sung by Bing Crosby. Songwriter Irving Berlin was Jewish. He did not celebrate Christmas as a religious holiday. But in his Christmas song, he shares a message of peace and happiness which all people can joy.

So from all of us – to all of you – we wish the happiest and most joyful holiday.

Jeans are considered to be the most popular kind of clothing in the world. They are popular almost everywhere and with everybody because they are not just practical but very fashionable as well. But what do you know about the history of jeans? Who made the first jeans?

In 1850 Levi Strauss, a young immigrant from Germany, arrived in San Francisco. He came to sell canvas, a heavy fabric used for tents, to gold miners. One day Strauss saw that the miners needed strong clothes for work. He quickly took some of his canvas and made it into pants. These pants were very strong and lasted a long time. The pants became very popular immediately. Later Strauss wanted to make his pants even better, so he started making his pants from cotton cloth that was softer than canvas but just as strong. This fabric came from Nimes, a city in France, and was called ‘denim’ (from de Nimes). Denim was popular in the fifteenth century. Christopher Columbus used denim for the sails of his ships. Sailors in Genoa, Italy, wore denim pants. The word ‘jeans’ comes from the word ‘Genoa’. Mr. Strauss made the first jeans in the United States, but their name and their kind of cloth came from Italy and France.

A magnitude-9.0 earthquake, also known as the Great East Japan Earthquake, struck in the Pacific Ocean off the northeast coast of Japan's Honshu island on March 11, 2011. It was the most powerful earthquake ever to hit Japan and the fourth largest ever recorded in the world. The earthquake triggered a massive tsunami that flooded more than 200 square miles of Coastal land. Waves estimated to be as high as 38 meters, the height of a 12-story building, tore apart Coastal towns and villages, carrying ships inland as thousands of homes were flattened, then washed tons of debris and vehicles back out to sea. Damage to the reactors at TEPCO's Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant then caused a third disaster, contaminating a wide area that still forces nearly 100,000 residents to live as evacuees. Tsunami waves also swept across the Pacific, causing damage or disruptions in Hawaii, California, Oregon, Washington and British Columbia.

Casualties from the earthquake and tsunami in Japan may be 30,000 and close to 500,000 people were forced to evacuate. More than 125,000 buildings have been washed away or seriously damaged; property damage is estimated to be more than $310 billion.

1. Where did the earthquake strike?

2. What caused the tsunami?

3. How many people were evacuated?
