Động từ khuyết thiếu được sử dụng để diễn tả khả năng, dự định, sự cấm đoán hay sự cần thiết… Động từ khuyết thiếu đứng trước động từ chính ở dạng nguyên thể và bổ sung nghĩa cho động từ chính. Một số động từ khuyết thiếuphổ biến: can, could, should, may, might, must, will, would và shall.
E.g. I cannot eat shrimp. (Tôi không thể ăn tôm.)
You must stop when the traffic lights turn red. (Bạn phải dừng lại khi đèn giao thông chuyển sang màu đỏ.)
II – Cấu trúc
Thể khẳng định
I/ We/ You/ They/ He/ She/ It + modal verb + V.
E.g. He should help her. (Anh ấy nên giúp cô ấy.)
Thể phủ định
I/ We/ You/ They/ He/ She/ It + modal verb + not + V.
E.g. He should not help her. (Anh ấy không nên giúp cô ấy.)

III – CÁCH SỬ DỤNG CÁC ĐỘNG TỪ KHUYẾT THIẾU THÔNG DỤNG
1 – Động từ khuyết thiếu: Can & Could (có thể)
Can và could đều có nghĩa là có thể, trong đó dạng phủ định của can là cannot (can’t), dạng phủ định của could là could not (could’t). Dưới đây là 3 cách sử dụng thường gặp của hai động từ khuyết thiếu này.

2 – Động từ khuyết thiếu: Should (nên)
✓ Should được sử dụng để đưa lời khuyên hoặc lời đề xuất.
E.g. I think you should tell her the truth. (Tôi nghĩ bạn nên nói với cô ấy sự thật.)
✓ Should còn được sử dụng để nói về một việc có thể xảy ra trong hiện tại hoặc tương lai.
E.g. The meeting should start soon. (Buổi họp sẽ được bắt đầu sớm thôi.)
3 – Động từ khuyết thiếu: Must & Have to
Chúng ta dùng must và have to để diễn tả sự cần thiết phải làm một việc gì đó.
Tuy nhiên cách sử dụng của chúng lại khá khác biệt:
