Không phải tất cả người nói tiếng Anh bản xứ nào đều phát âm tiếng Anh - Mỹ hoặc Anh - Anh chuẩn. Bạn cần tránh những lỗi nghiêm trọng khiến người nghe không hiểu mình đang nói gì.

Có 3 cấp độ phát âm tiếng Anh:

Cấp độ 1: Người bản xứ không hiểu bạn nói gì. Bạn nói sai âm hoặc sai trọng âm.

Cấp độ 2: Người bản xứ có thể hiểu bạn nói, nhưng phải tập trung.

Cấp độ 3: Người bản xứ có thể hiểu bạn dễ dàng, phát âm tiếng Anh của bạn rõ ràng và trôi chảy.

Thế nào là cấp độ 3?

Chỉ có 2 chất giọng tiếng Anh phổ biến trên thế giới:

- Phát âm Anh - Mỹ (GenAm)

- Phát âm Anh - Anh (RP – received pronunciation)

Nếu bạn phát âm tiếng Anh - Mỹ hoặc Anh - Anh sẽ dễ hiểu với cả người bản xứ lẫn không bản xứ. Lý do là hai chất giọng (accent) này được sử dụng phổ biến trên TV, phim ảnh và trong giáo trình tiếng Anh.

Một điều thú vị là không phải tất cả người nói tiếng Anh bản xứ nào (nơi tiếng Anh là ngôn ngữ chính thức) đều phát âm tiếng Anh - Mỹ hoặc Anh - Anh. Hồi mới sang Mỹ, mình ở cùng phòng với một sinh viên đến từ Nigeria, nơi tiếng Anh là ngôn ngữ chính thức. Anh bạn thi TOEFL iBT được 98 điểm và nói accent tương đối nặng. Anh chàng cũng gặp một chút khó khăn khi mới đến Mỹ để thích nghi với kiểu phát âm Anh - Mỹ.

Bạn cần nói tiếng Anh - Mỹ hoặc Anh - Anh chuẩn tới cỡ nào?

Phát âm tiếng Anh của bạn có thể vẫn dễ hiểu, kể cả khi bạn có chút V-lish. Nhưng nếu accent của bạn càng nặng, người nước ngoài càng gặp nhiều khó khăn để hiểu bạn.

Tất nhiên, không phải lỗi phát âm tiếng Anh nào cũng tai hại giống nhau. Nói một vài âm tiếng Anh hơi khác so với phát âm chuẩn có thể không phải là thảm họa. Những lỗi phát âm nghiêm trọng nhất bao gồm:

- Bạn cố gắng nói quá nhanh vì nghĩ nghe sẽ giống người bản xứ.

- Bạn nuốt âm (lie thay vì like).

- Bạn nhấn sai trọng âm (inNOcent thay vì INnocent).
