I have been studying English for over 5 years, and I found out that it had brought me a lot of benefits. My mother told me English is an international language, so everyone should learn English in order to have an advantage to access to the world. For me it is not just simply a tool for communication, but it is also opens new doors to the vast ocean. It helps me get close to many sources of information through the books and material that I have read while learning. Most of the books for learning English are about science, nature, news from around the world or much more interesting content so they can attract readers. Therefore, I can gain a lot of useful knowledge as well as having fun time reading them besides the skills in English. I also make a lot of new friends from many countries, and they let me know about many different cultures, the diversity of custom and tradition. I speak to people from Europe, America and Africa, each of my friends has a lot of interesting things for me to explore, and we are all connected with each other by English. I have a dream that one day I can travel to many parts of the world, and there is no tool which is simple to get and useful to help me achieve that dream like English. I am totally confident that I can access to international friends as long as they also speak English, and the world is waiting for me to explore. English brings me a lot more benefits that I cannot name, and I am sure that I will regret if I do not study it properly.

How gifted programs succeed

This re-engagement is achieved in gifted schools and programs through a number of ways, including the following:

  • Gifted kids find many types of gifted programs challenging. These programs usually involve a greater workload, a faster pace, and lots of enrichment.
  • Many gifted schools and programs provide learning environments that differentiate between each child's learning needs. For example, children might be given advanced instruction in subjects they excel in and more graduated instruction for subjects they struggle in. This further reduces the chance of a mismatch between a child's learning needs and the course curriculum.
  • In many gifted learning environments, students are encouraged to learn about subjects that interest them the most. Gifted research shows that this promotes a love of learning and can ignite a passion to pursue more in-depth studies.
  • Gifted programs should, in theory, be taught by teachers with specialized training in gifted education. Teachers are trained to differentiate between students in terms of their unique learning needs.
  • Dedicated or segregated gifted schools and programs enable students to be in school with peers who often have similar abilities and interests as them. This can provide a stimulating environment. This also enables some students to more easily find a group of friends.
  • Gifted programs can be a great option for students with special needs, such as learning disabilities (like dyslexia) and developmental disabilities (like autism and Asperger's syndrome).
  • Gifted high schools (or high schools with gifted programs) can give students a leg up when transitioning to university. Since gifted programs involve a heavy workload and intensive curriculum, students become accustomed to studying challenging material at a fast pace, thereby developing crucial skills for excelling in university or college. This makes them similar to IB and AP programs, and other alternative options.
  • Many universities and colleges also think highly of high school gifted programs, which can improve a student’s chances for acceptance.

Find native English speakers      In certain areas it’s the hardest thing to do, but it’s the best use of your time. Talking to actual native speakers is the most effective way to improve your English skills, speaking or otherwise. So whether you have to Skype them, call them, or beg them to speak to you, do so. Your progress will be faster this way than any other.

Listen to the music of English    No, not English music, the music of English - its lilt, its prosody, the sing-songy-ness of it. The intonation. Even if you speak perfect English technically, if you speak it like a robot you’re not speaking it the way it’s meant to be spoken.

Slow down    Above all, if you want to be understood, slow down. The more clearly you speak, the better chance your listener has of understanding you. It’s tempting to get nervous and want to speed up to get it all over with, but you can’t do that! Clarity is key - for some native English speakers, too!

Record yourself   Though we hear ourselves all the time, we really don’t know quite what we sound like. So record yourself! What are the weak and strong points you hear in your speech? And then you can concentrate on what you need to work on.

Speak English at home    This is the biggest, easiest mistake to make. You go about your day, you’re on the job working partly in English, you go to your English class, and then you go home and revert back to your native tongue. While you may be making slow improvements, you’ll never get past that dreaded lingual plateau. Make a point to speak it at home, too. Have only English at the dinner table. Stick to English TV at home. Make it as 24/7 as possible.
