T = Tim

S = Sal

You’ve got a new smartphone, Sal! Can I have a look at it?

S Yes, of course, Tim. I got it for a good price, and it’s great for social networking. My parents didn’t want me to buy it, though. They keep telling me I spend too much time on my phone already, and this one has even more things to keep me busy!

T You know, I sort of understand their point. I wish my sister would put her phone down once in a while. She even uses it at the dinner table, and it drives us all crazy! She never hears what we’re saying, or talks to us.

Yeah, some of my friends are like that. It is frustrating. Anyway, my parents don’t let anyone bring their phone to the dinner table.

T Really?

S Yeah, it’s good because we really do talk about a lot of important things while we’re eating. If our phones were on, we probably wouldn’t communicate at all.

T Well, my mum thinks the MP3 player on my phone is bad for me, so she only lets me use it for an hour a day. She says it’s going to damage my hearing.

You do have the volume up very high. I’ve heard it from across the room. Maybe you could make a deal with your mum. Say you’ll agree to play music much more quietly if you can use the MP3 player more often.

That’s a good idea. Thanks! Hey, can you show me what games you have on your phone?

Lucy:So, what are you going to do this summer?

Mark:Well, I'm probably going to go on vacation with my family for a week, but I think that I should get a summer job because I need to get some money. Actually, I haven't decided yet. What about you?

Lucy:I'm going to Thailand for the summer. I'm going to work as a (1)  in a Thai restaurant for 2 months.

Mark:Really? That sounds great! Is it a (2)  job?

Lucy:Yes. Actually, the work won't be very interesting. It'll be mostly taking orders, serving food and drinks and dealing with bill (3)  . My manager is so generous to (4)  me $800/ month.

Mark:Great! I wish I could get a job with such a high (5)  like that. It'll be like a holiday, but you'll be earning money too.

Lucy:Yes, it's a chance to go abroad and maybe meet some new people. I think that I won't be under job (6)  because my hours are 5 hours per day, so I'll have plenty of time during the day to go walking.

Mark:How did you find out about it?

Lucy:I read about it in a book called Summer Work Abroad. It tells you about all kinds of different jobs in different places. You can work as a (7)  in Bangkok. They need people who can speak English well.

Mark:Oh! I like the sound of that!

Lucy:Yes, of course the problem with that sort of work is that it is a (8)  job so you're paid hourly. And If you like it, you should (9)  now.

Mark:Oh! I haven't decided yet.

Lucy:You know within just 2 days, we have received more than 200 (10)  .

Mark:OK. Anyway, it's worth a try. Thank you, Lucy.

Read the passage below and decide whether the statements are TRUE or FALSE?

Volunteering is a way to gain a lot of skills that can be transferred into a workplace. These skills include: confidence, communication, responsibility, teamwork and innovation. Becoming a volunteer will not only provide you with experience which is great for personal gain, but it will also be a good addition to your CV as it will help you to stand out, as it has allowed you to network and meet new people and more opportunities. Most importantly, from the process of volunteering, young people will gain a sense of personal satisfaction gained by assisting another person which will enhance their social awareness.

By becoming a volunteer in your community you can make a change by letting your voice be heard within society, allowing you to express your thoughts and opinions on certain issues that have occurred that you have previously not been given a say in. This could inspire more events or services that could gradually assist more people.

Volunteers also have an enormous impact on the health and well-being of communities worldwide, which allows society to thrive due to the assistance of young volunteers. From volunteering the community will also gain a generation of young people who care about where they live and are willing to make a commitment to improve society.

Question: Volunteering is good for your CV.
