Whereas, in the country, I could oly eat things at certain times of the year - for example strawberries in June and turnips in winter. I lived my childhood with the seasons.

Also we made most of our food and would never eat frozen or tinned food. Everything was fresh - so it must be better than the type of food I am taking now in the city. City people may think people in the country miss a lot of things about modern life, but in my opinion they miss a lot more than them - they miss real life.

Have you ever wondered what the weather is like in other places around the world? Today, I’d like to talk about the changing seasons in my city. The winter season usually begins in December and ends in early March. The coldest month is January, and temperatures can drop below freezing for most of this month. The city usually averages about 30 inches of snow during this 3-month period. Occasionally, we have snow storms that can drop a foot of snow in a very short period of time. Spring usually arrives in late March, it’s a beautiful season because the flowers start to bloom. It is sometimes windy, and this is great for flying kites. People in my city often like to go on picnics, stroll though parks, and play outdoor games. Summer starts in June and it’s very dry with little rain throughout the season. Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, is a city of contrasts. It is an exciting, crowded, modem city and at
the same time, a city that is full of history. The streets of Bangkok are usually noisy and crowded with people. Some are selling food, other selling clothing, cassette tapes, flowers, or souvenirs. Visitors love the river markets, the beautiful temples and architecture, and the nightlife. They also enjoy the food, the
shopping, and the friendly Thai people. Everyone seems to smile there.
Most of the year, Bangkok is hotter than any other capital cities in Asia, but from December to
February, the weather is cooler and much more comfortable. Actually, it is an interesting city to visit at
any time of the year. The shopping is excellent, and the price is cheaper than in many other large cities in
Southeast Asia.
There is always plenty to do in Bangkok any time of the day or night from watching Thai dancing or
boxing to taking a boat trip on the river or trying some of the delicious and spicy food. And if you get
tired of the city and the traffic, there are beautiful beaches only two hours away by bus.

2. How are the streets of Bangkok?
3. What is the weather like in Bangkok in January?

Lan’s Malaysian pen pal, Razali Maryam, was staying with Lan last week. Maryam is from Kuala Lumpur. Maryam and Lan have been pen pals for over two years and they correspond at least once every two weeks, but this was their first meeting.

On Maryam's first day in Ha Noi, Lan took her to Hoan Kiem Lake. Like Kuala Lumpur, Ha Noi is a busy modem city. Maryam was really impressed by the beauty of the city and by the friendliness of its people.

Over the next few days, the girls visited Ho Chi Minh's Mausoleum, the History Museum and the Temple of Literature, as well as many beautiful parks and lakes in Ha Noi. On Friday, Maryam wanted to visit the mosque on Hang Luoc Street. Lan used to walk past the mosque on her way to primary school. However, this was Lan’s first visit. She enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere while Maryam was praying.

“I wish you had a longer vacation,” Lan said to Maryam at the end of the week.

“Yes, I wish I had more time to get to know your beautiful country better. Lan, would you like to come and visit me next summer?” Maryam asked.

“That would be great! However, it seems very difficult for me to have a trip abroad. It all depends on my parents. Anyway, we’ll keep in touch.”

Giúp mik nhé I have Learned, often the hard way, that there are a few simple rules about how to make life easier both before and after your journey. First of All, always check and double-check departure times. It is amazing how few people really do this carefully. Once i arrived at the airport a few minutes after ten. My secretary had got the ticket for me and i thought she said that the plane left at 10:50. I walked calmly to the departure desk, thinking I still had a little time to spare. I...

It is amazing how few people really do this carefully. Once i arrived at the airport a few minutes after ten. My secretary had got the ticket for me and i thought she said that the plane left at 10:50. I walked calmly to the departure desk, thinking I still had a little time to spare. I didn`t bother to take a good look at the ticket. The clerk at the desk told me politely but firmly that the departure time was 10:15 and that the flight was, according to international regulations, " now closed! ". I had to wait three hours for the next one and missed an importent meeting.

The second rule is to remember that even in this age of credit cards, it is still importent to have at least a little of the local currency with you when you arrive in a country. This can be absolutely essential if you are flying to a place few tourists normally visit. A few years ago, I took a business trip to Oklahoma. I flew there from London via Dallas, with very little time to change planes in between. I arrived there at midnight and the bank at the airport was closed. The only way to get to my hotel was by taxi and since I had no Dollars, i offered to pay in Pounds instead." Listen, Buddy! I only take Real money! " the driver said angrily. Luckily I was able to borrow a few dollars from a clerk at the hotel, but it was Embarrassing.

The third and last rule is to find out as much as you can about the weather at your destination before you leave, especially if you can take only a little baggage with you. I feel sorry for some of my colleagues who travel in heavy suits and raincoats in May, when it is still fairly cool in London or Manchester, to places like Athens, Rome or Madrid, where it is already beginning to get quite warm during a day. Few people understand just how importent it is to have the right sort of clothes with you in these days of rapid air travel.

I. Discuss these questions. Campare your answers.

1. Explain why the writer once arrived at the airport only a few minutes before the plane left.

2. Whose fault do you think it was? Thư writer's or his secretary's? Give reasons for your answer.

3. Explain why the writer think it is essential to have at least a little local currency when you arrive in a foreign country.

4. Describe some of the problems you could have if you ignore the advice in the last paragraph

Few people understand just how important it is to have the right sort of clothes with you in these days of rapid air travel.

I have Learned, often the hard way, that there are a few simple rules about how to make life easier both before and after your journey. I didn`t bother to take a good look at the ticket. The clerk at the desk told me politely but firmly that the departure time was 10:15 and that the flight was, according to international regulations, " now closed! ". I had to wait three hours for the next one and missed an important meeting.

The second rule is to remember that even in this age of credit cards, it is still important to have at least a little of the local currency with you when you arrive in a country.
